Technology in Support of Reading/Language Arts Common Core State Standards (K-12) Workshop

This is a public wiki, the link will be sent to all presenters, exhibitors, and attendees and posted on the NHSTE website. Please consider your posts, follow proper posting etiquette, check your spelling, and be kind in your comments - even those suggesting areas for improvement.

For our presenters, here are the steps to add a resource (handout, copy of your presentation, or link):
  1. Sign in if needed, I made the site public, even for posting, you should not need to do this - but if you do just create a free account first.
  2. Click on the EDIT tab in the top right hand corner.
  3. Position your cursor by the Resources/Handouts: header by your session.
  4. Click on the INSERT IMAGES & FILES icon (box with green and orange graphic just below the "E" of Editor in the menu bar.
  5. Select Upload Files and follow the prompts. (looks like there are 2 options, the "Click here to use our single file upload tool." seems like it should work)
  6. If you are adding a link to a website, use the INSERT LINK icon (to the left of the INSERT IMAGES & FILES icon) and follow the prompts.
  7. Be sure to SAVE (top right hand corner) before exiting.

Blended Voices: Cultural Integration Using Technology [K-12, ELL] ~ Audrey Rogers & Lyra Riabov, Southern New Hampshire University [a.rogers@snhu.edu]
Discover how to bring students from diverse cultures together using technology to facilitate understanding and collaboration. The presenters demonstrate how their project offers an opportunity for domestic students to have a firsthand experience of learning world cultures and ELL students to learn about American culture, practice English, and make friends with American students. The project includes combined classes of ELL and domestic students who discuss cultural topics and are engaged in cultural activities. Students use the Internet, an interactive white board, Google Earth, Skype, Audacity and then script, record, and create podcasts that are posted in iTunesU. Students also use PowerPoint, the Blackboard Discussion Forum, and record podcasts for the reflection on their experience.

Animating Stories with Scratch [K-8, SPED, ELL] ~ Tammy Andrew, HS Computer Science, Milford HS [tammyandrew7@gmail.com]
Scratch is a free software learning environment originally designed by MIT as a way to teach programming concepts, but it is also a valuable tool for helping students develop and organize ideas. It is easy and fun to use, which motivates kids to play with it to see what else it can do. In its simplest form, Scratch is a platform on which kids can create animations for their stories or write stories from the animations they create. The Scratch website, scratch.mit.edu, provides an "Imagine, Program, Share" platform with support for teachers and students, plus an area where projects are shared globally.

Join two language arts teachers who began using Google Docs four years ago and have since made the collection of Google tools part of their everyday life at school. Explore the many language arts applications they use for Blogger, Google Sites, and Forms. They plan to demonstrate the tools, explain how they are used in the classroom, and share student work. As veteran educators, they will adapt this session to meet the needs of the attendees.
